hibernating

It seems to snow every other day
and the cold has been unrelenting.

I should be writing thank you notes
but instead grab a book and a cup of tea
then pull a blanket over my head and nap with the cat.

november

After a very leisurely morning I decided to take a short ride.
The hills are golden and this morning's strong winds
and storms cleared many tree branches.

The Gorgeous Nothings is a book documenting the scraps of envelopes
Emily Dickinson wrote her poetry on and carried around in her dress pocket.

Her spare and beautiful words are elegantly photographed on one page
with a "translation" of her handwriting on the adjacent page.
A treasure.

The ground cherries (?) were pulled from the roadside
and placed in a vase by my bed.

Feeling a bit rested,
I finished knitting my gloves today.

autumn

dogwood fruit, wild apples, yarn, pumpkin

Today I went for a drive to my favorite stretch of local road
and took a few photos of the changing landscape.

The wind crackled through the drying corn
and set the goldenrod tops dancing.

What appeared to be a golden eagle hunted over the field.
I admit it's early to see these majestic birds migrating,
but the size, level wing span, golden head
and lack of white had me convinced.

The photos aren't the best, the bird was quite high up.
(I cropped them down to the last point of focus.)
You can see the bird as a dark spot in the upper right corner of the first photo.

Back home to an afternoon with a new knitting project
and a bowl of vegetable soup for dinner.

Happy Equinox!

End of September

There is a small flock of Robins that roost in
my tree line every year on their migration South.

They laugh and chirp morning and evening,
exchanging tales of their daily adventures.

I will not see them again until the second week in March.

As Autumn Approaches...

Tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox;
the sun will be directly in line with the equator.
12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness.
A day of in-betweens.

Pears, pumpkins and burning sunsets.
Happy Autumn to all.

Sunday Drive

Finally rain!
We are 6" below the normal rainfall for the year
so today's steady showers are a welcome relief.
Leaves are popping...that sharp chartreuse color
made even more intense by the misty sky.

The homes are on a small dirt and gravel backroad
that winds along a stream and through a small gorge.

An apartment dweller can dream...

Tuesday

The light was so lovely when I left work today I went for a short ride.

The hilltops are green and the farmers are starting to turn their fields.
When I was young I remember this as the best time to 'walk the fields'
looking for quartz and arrowheads in the deep ruts.

And a beautiful card in the mail from a dear friend in Arizona.
She hand cut the stamp, I love the image and will put it in a frame.
Thanks Suzanne!
