finally sun

There may still be some clouds but today the sun returned.
After puttering around the house
I spent about an hour weeding in my friend's garden.

The other day I was at work chatting with a customer about
my garden sitting opportunity and he replied,
"ooh...that's a tricky thing, what if something dies?"

Guess I never thought about it but now that it's been mentioned I'm wondering
if I maybe took out a row of carrots and weeded around other weeds!
If you're reading this Jennifer, please remember I had the best of intentions!

The radishes were pushing their way out of the ground,
some of them beginning to split from all the rain,
so I pulled two out for myself.

It's the Fourth of July, the day our country declared its independence.
My thanks to all who have served to keep it that way.
Tonight fireworks will light up the sky.

garden gnome

A friend of mine is on vacation and asked if I would watch her garden.
Earthworms, pincher bugs, ants and all!

Tonight I stopped over after work to do some weeding.
How eagerly we jump into tasks that are unfamiliar!

Pulling weeds is much like knitting to me,
a repetitive action that slows me down, smoothing away the day.

A regular garden gnome, I am!
Perhaps I should felt myself a little red cap.
*smile*

The beautiful kale was my reward for topping off the wheel barrow.
Guess what's for dinner tonight!

dudley farm

Fred

This is the last of my Florida posts.
Dudley farm was built in 1855 and remains an historic
working farm just outside of Gainesville.

What I love about Dudley is that you must park in a lot
and then walk the old road back to the farm.
That short walk has the power to transport you back in time.

Florida is mostly sand covered as is apparent from the garden photo.
There is a small herd of cattle, a horse, a mule and chickens
that are year round residents.

The kitchen is in a separate building just behind the house,
as Florida summers can be very hot and humid.

I absolutely love the corn husk broom!
Would love to make one of my own.
A quilt in progress hangs on a frame suspended over
the beds in the front bedroom.

Thanks for allowing me to share some of my favorite holiday photos.
Now it's back to making things!

Solebury Orchards

Solebury Orchards opened this week, it's a favorite of mine.
Cherries were almost done for the year and one quart took a long time to pick.
But the blueberry bushes were enormous and full of berries.
I love crawling under them and just hiding out for a while.

Picnic tables under the cherry trees offered
a beautiful place to rest after an afternoon in the sun.
The branches hang so low that the trees feel like table companions...
Next time I will pack a lunch.

A perfect first weekend of summer.

Wednesday - Suddenly Summer

Tomorrow may be the Solstice
but summer's heat arrived with a vengeance today.

After work I stopped by the Allentown Rose Garden.
Tree Swallows live in the birdhouses placed atop each pergola.
You know it's hot when the birds start panting.

I love the smell of heat soaked roses...
The warmth gives such depth to the scent.
Not like the hothouse blooms I buy at the store.

As I was leaving I passed a young man carrying his
guitar case over to a bench by the pond.
What a lovely way to end the day.
If only I could have stayed to listen.

More heat tomorrow.
