rainy north carolina

I'm back from my 1200 mile whirlwind tour of North Carolina and Virginia.
It was great to visit my older brother's new home for the first time.
My nephew was away at camp but his dog Joey was a great cuddle bug!
D is safely back in Florida...the apartment is quiet.

There was a lot of rain but that didn't deter the hummingbirds.
Such a beautiful countryside all lush and green.
The farmers' market was busy on Saturday morning
and I picked up some delicious honey.

Letters need to be written and packages sent...so much to do before
I leave on a business trip to Chicago next week!

As Autumn Approaches...

Tomorrow is the Autumnal Equinox;
the sun will be directly in line with the equator.
12 hours of daylight and 12 of darkness.
A day of in-betweens.

Pears, pumpkins and burning sunsets.
Happy Autumn to all.

Evening Walk

After work I went grocery shopping and then home.
My plan was to devour the rest of Wild and have a bit of dinner.

So there I am, reading about a woman out in the woods...
why am I not a woman out in the woods?!?

About an hour of sun remained
so I pulled on my boots and headed outside.

Now I'm tired, but in a good way.
Back to the book!

Kutztown Folk Festival

What better way to spend the Fourth of July than at a festival.
This was my first time to the Kutztown Folk Festival and it was blistering hot.

Hex signs and quilts are a staple in PA Dutch tradition.
The quilt barn was amazing and all the pieces were for sale.
Glassblowing, weaving and beekeeping were only some
of the other traditional crafts being demonstrated.

For lunch I had a hotdog with sauerkraut and a huge cup
of freshly squeezed lemonade, yum.

I love the little goat in the livestock tent and the girl
braiding the horse's forelock would have been me many years ago.
A Wood Thrush print, various herbal concoctions and simple stoneware mug
all came home with me.

Happy Fourth of July!

Wednesday - Yesterday's Walk

Yesterday I took a long, slow walk around the Pool Wildlife Sanctuary.
The woods were full of flowering trees, ground cover and many birds.

Bee hives were quiet, an old honey soaked tray glowed in the sun.
The small pond was teeming with tadpoles all gathered around the
perimeter to warm themselves.

A Common Merganser and his two female companions quickly
passed by as I sat by the stream.
I love the auburn heads on the females.
Such primitive looking birds.

More photos of my walk tomorrow.
